Amongst many other things, Nigel Jelks plays mandoline and concertina. His first and last TV appearance was playing mandoline with The Angus Cronies, a concert party led by Jim Fairweather that won Grampian TV’s Bothy Nichts competition. After a spell with the Cronies, the renowned Scottish dance-band leader Lindsay Ross tells that Nigel cycled over from Letham to Friockheim and asked Lindsay to ‘join his band’. This wasn’t true, of course, as Lindsay was the one with the van. The Lindsay Ross Trio played a blend of Scottish and ballroom music, plus stage and pit work.
In the late 70s to early 90s, Nigel could be seen sessioning at almost every Scottish folk festival during their heyday. He also undertook various work, mostly on guitar, with several different Scottish band artists including playing and BBC recording with the Wayne Robertson Band. In 2000, he produced for Angus Council Traditional Music in Angus, a booklet listing Angus musicians, singers, dancers and all their activities and from this went on to undertake the co-ordination of The Hairst Sessions and Saturday Skirls (www.thehairst.com).
A seasoned artiste, he now knows more than he can do or remember. He can be found, between other gigs, at the regular Tuesday-evening session in Kirriemuir.
