The Valaam Ensemble

Russian Liturgical Chants and Folk Songs from the Valaam Monastery of St Petersburg

The ensemble was organized in 1993 by 5 enthusiastic professional male singers, who graduated from Glinka Choir Academy and the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory in St-Petersburg as conductors and vocalists. Their repertoire consists of Orthodox liturgical singing and Russian folk songs, in the rich musical tradition of Northern Russia. The main task is to research, perform and preserve the rich musical heritage of the North of Russia.

During the summer the ensemble perform at the Holy Transfiguration Monastery on the Valaam Island (Lake Ladoga, Russia) alongside the monk's choir while  in winter they sing at the services at the representative church of the monastery in St Petersburg.
 

The line-up of the ensemble is Mikhail Ruzanov (Group leader and Second Tenor), Dmitry Popov (First Tenor, Counter Tenor), Nikholai Kozlov (Baritone), Tselebrovsky Vladimir (Baritone) and Mikhail Kruglov (Bass Profundo)
